Invisalign Clear Aligners

Crooked or crowded teeth are not only a cosmetic concern. They can be harder to clean and may place uneven pressure on your bite. If fixed braces have never appealed to you, Invisalign at Vredekloof Dental offers a way to straighten your teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of thin, transparent plastic trays, each one made to fit your teeth closely. Every set of aligners is slightly different from the last and applies gentle pressure that moves the teeth a small amount. You switch to a new set every one to two weeks, following a plan that is mapped out before treatment begins.

Who Can Be Treated With Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are often used to correct crowding or to close gaps between teeth. They are a popular choice for adults and older teenagers who would like a discreet option that fits around work or school. More complex bite problems may need a different approach, and the dentist will explain whether aligners are suitable for you at your consultation.

What Does Treatment Involve?

Treatment starts with a consultation and digital scans or impressions of your teeth. From these, a treatment plan is created showing how your teeth are expected to move at each stage. Once your aligners are ready, you will attend regular check-in appointments so that progress can be monitored. Treatment time varies and depends on how much movement is needed.

How Do You Get The Most From Your Aligners?

Aligners only work while they are being worn, so they need to be in your mouth for around 20 to 22 hours a day. A few daily habits make a real difference:

  • take them out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water
  • brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in
  • clean the aligners every day
  • keep them in their case whenever they are out of your mouth

What Happens When Treatment Ends?

Teeth naturally tend to drift back towards their old positions, so a retainer is needed to hold them in place. Your dentist will explain how and when to wear it. With your teeth in their new position, it can be a good time to consider professional whitening, or to look at whether a wider smile makeover would address any remaining concerns.
